1. Nigeria Metele attack: President Buhari speaks of deep shock

Nigeria's leader has vowed to close the "loopholes" which allowed militants to reportedly kill dozens of soldiers at a base in north-eastern Borno state.

President Muhammadu Buhari addressed last Sunday's attack publicly after the army acknowledged it had taken place.

It had been reported that at least 40 soldiers died when an Islamist militant group targeted the base in Metele.

But the army refused to confirm the reports until Friday, when they put out a release disputing the death toll.

President Buhari said he was deeply shocked by the news in a statement released on Saturday.

The president - who faces an election in three months time - added no responsible leader "would rest on his oars... to allow terrorists to endanger the lives of its military personnel and other citizens".

As a result, he planned to meet with military and intelligence chiefs "in the coming days" to plan their "next steps".

The army did not provide a different figure.

2. Russia seizes Ukrainian ships near annexed Crimea after firing on them

Russia seized three Ukrainian naval ships off the coast of Russia-annexed Crimea on Sunday after opening fire on them and wounding several sailors, a move that risks igniting a dangerous new crisis between the two countries.

Russia’s FSB security service said early on Monday its border patrol boats had seized the Ukrainian naval vessels in the Black Sea and used weapons to force them to stop, Russian news agencies reported.

The FSB said it had been forced to act because the ships — two small Ukrainian armoured artillery vessels and a tug boat — had illegally entered its territorial waters, attempted illegal actions, and ignored warnings to stop while manoeuvring dangerously.

3. Uganda party boat capsizes on Lake Victoria, killing 29

At least 29 people are now known to have died after a cruise boat carrying party revellers capsized on Lake Victoria, Ugandan police say.

The vessel was carrying close to 100 people when it sank on Saturday near Uganda's capital, Kampala.

Ugandan media named a number of well-known people said to be on the boat, adding that the prince of a traditional kingdom had survived.

Lake Victoria sees regular accidents, often involving overcrowded vessels.

Scores of people died when a ferry sank on the lake off Tanzania in September.

Saturday's accident occurred off Uganda's Mukono district.

Deputy police spokesman Patrick Onyango told Reuters news agency: "The boat was overloaded and secondly there was bad weather."

More than 20 people have been rescued from the water, police say, but an unknown number remain missing.

4. Kenya kidnap: Police offer reward in hunt for Silvia Romano

Kenyan police have offered a $10,000 (£7,600) reward to help find an Italian aid worker and the three men accused of abducting her on Tuesday.

Silvia Romano was taken by gunmen from a small rural hotel in Kilifi County in the south-east of the country.

Five people, including three children, were wounded in the attack and taken to hospital.

Police said that they were "doing all they can to rescue" Ms Romano and arrest the kidnappers.

It is not known whether the men who kidnapped the 23-year-old volunteer are members of a local gang aiming to get a ransom or are linked to the Islamist militant group al-Shabab.

5.Copa Libertadores: Boca Juniors against River Plate match postponed again

Sunday's rescheduled Copa Libertadores final second leg between Boca Juniors and River Plate has been postponed.

Violence had forced the match between the bitter Argentine rivals to first be delayed on Saturday.

The Boca Juniors team bus was attacked by River Plate fans on its way to the game at River's Estadio Monumental.

The game was rearranged for Sunday at 20:00 GMT, 24 hours later than planned, but was postponed three hours before the new kick-off time.

A decision on whether the match will be rearranged for another date has yet to be announced.
