T ell us about your educational background.
I earned my Bachelor in Economics from Covenant University in Ota, Ogun State. Prior to that, I attended Home Science Association School, Ikoyi, Lagos State, and Faith Academy, Ota, Ogun State, for my elementary and secondary education, respectively. Post-graduation, I attended various training covering different aspects of finance and investments. In addition, I am currently in the final stages of becoming chartered by the Association of Chartered Accountants. Looking back, I believe my educational background has prepared me to some extent for the career path I am pursuing.
Where do you work?
I work with Growth and Development Limited, Ilupeju, Lagos. It is a nascent, non-bank financial institution with interests in asset management, finance and leasing, financial advisory and securities trading. We manage various classes of investments and give credit facilities to eligible retail and institutional clients.
Tell us about your job.
Currently, I work as an asset management analyst. My job is to take care of all aspects of investment products under the business unit. I prepare investment strategy that guides the kinds of investment that are done. I also prepare monthly and quarterly reports on the performance, structure and size of the funds, proposals and marketing documents to prospective clients and so on. I’ve worked there for three years.
I also cross-function as a branding and strategy analyst as I develop strategies for improving our company’s visibility within the industry. Additionally, I manage external agencies and vendors and ensure proper execution of contracts as well as the effective utilisation of our marketing and branding budget.
I am a part of the in-house committee that organises activities within the organisation to promote teamwork and internalisation of the brand’s key messages.
What are the challenges you face and how do you surmount them?
Firstly, I joined the company without any prior experience in finance roles. I have had cases where I had to present reports and draw out strategies with no existing templates. The willingness to learn and have a teachable spirit have helped me immensely to surmount challenges, both relating to my roles and other office matters.
What are the other factors that helped you overcome hard times?
My family, mentors and friends. My story would be incomplete without mentioning the wonderful team I have been blessed with. With them, it is easy to maintain a positive outlook and find the best out of every situation.
What are the notable achievements you’ve garnered since you started working there?
One of my major achievements is being a key member of the team that designed, developed and marketed the company’s first major fund which was oversubscribed. In addition, as part of brand building efforts, I coordinated the planning around GDL’s maiden business conference which saw over 500 businesspersons in attendance.
I also recently headed a team that developed a product that is poised to be a game changer in the credit space in Nigeria.
How do you plan to rise to the top?
I have realised that career advancement requires you to move out of your comfort zone to take on projects or assignments that are seemingly bigger than you. Successful delivery gives the impression that you are ready for the next level in your career. This is what I intend to do for the next couple of years – keep seeking out roles and opportunities that push me to go beyond my current capacity.
Furthermore, I am very keen on character development. I am always working on building myself to do more and be more. Persistent self-development has contributed to bringing me to where I am, and I believe it will take me even farther.
What are your long-term goals?
A few of my future goals include leading teams in a capacity that revolves around project finance, investment and strategy. Moreover, work is ongoing on some of my other side interests this year.
Does your job affect your social life?
No, it does not. My job is tasking but thankfully, I have been able to effectively balance my work, personal life (spiritually and physically), taking professional exams, running some businesses and my relationships.
Who are your role models?
My role models currently are my parents and my boss, Mr. Kola Ayeye. Mr. Ayeye is one of the most intelligent and authentic persons I know. It is truly a privilege to work for and with him.
What are your other interests?
I have large interests in volunteer causes that support the well-being of the girl child. Currently, I co-run The Bloom Tribe, which is a faith-based social enterprise, partnering with people to serve, support and give relief to less privileged girls and families in Nigeria.
I also have interests in reading, travelling, mentoring and hair styling.
