2019 is the year Girl Power finally brings the moolah!
We all have friends except those weirdos that claim they don’t, but let us not digress.
A good friend should asides from being there for you, spur you on to achieve your dreams and vice versa and that is why we spotlight Waje Iruobe and Omawumi Megbele.
These two divas in the entertainment industry have been friends for over a decade in an industry that provides a daily dose of catfights, dogfights and stabs thrown over the web in to social media spaces just to create a buzz.
A recent interview of these aspiring media moguls was so refreshing to watch because all we saw were two women comfortable in their skin, sharing their experiences and LAUGHING!
Waje and Omawunmi are not only just friends, but have recently become business partners as they unveiled their media house, Hermanes media, a new media establishment uniquely conceived to change the game in the media business.
Omawumi in a chat talking about Hermanes media and the reason for the partnership said, “We both have a considerable amount of experience working in and navigating the media industry. We believe we can put this knowledge to good use”. Both singers expressed their recognition of a gap in the industry that needs to be filled. “We need to start telling our own stories, and we need to be more expressive and innovative about it.
These Queens launched their first project ,a movie to address issues women face in today’s world. The movie, which is titled ‘She is’, was premiered on Sunday, March 10, 2019, at Filmhouse in Lekki, Lagos.
‘She is’ tells a story of an average Nigerian woman, Frances, played by Somkele Iyamah Idhalama, who, upon achieving success in her chosen career, finds it hard to settle down in marriage. Also, Waje and Omawunmi brought their musical skill to use as they wrote and performed the soundtrack of the movie.
Waje revealed the secret of her friendship with Omawumi, “When you meet someone who you share the same tastes with and reasons alike with you, then you have every reason to be close to the person. We have both been through a lot together and she has proved to be a true friend time and again. Apart from music, we do a lot of things together and we understand each other so well. She is someone I can call a true friend.
On Omawumi's part, she had this to say, "We've been friends for like over a decade! Yes. Can you see how difficult it is...women being friends, can't you see how difficult it is, I don lose weight based on how difficult...you are so difficult Waje. [General Laughter] In all seriousness it just boils down to just understanding each other, I believe. The same emotions always comes up, its not like we too special that we are devoid of it...there are sometimes she feels like slapping me, there are sometimes I feel like hitting her...but you go see say if Waje touch me I don lose weight drastically [General laughter again] Waje get one bone, if she blows you, you go just paralyse. It's not always easy but we try to rise above it all the time and make the best of each other and we have a lot of things in common, you know...we pray a lot together, it helps''.
One of the things that women must aspire to, is to openly support and lift each other up. With so many obstacles on the road to gender equality, we don't need to create another one by getting in our own way — despite our culture's nasty habit of trying to pit us against each other.
Here is to making giant strides and having huge laughs with your bestie while at it.
