5 Ways Nigerian Fashion Has Evolved
Fashion is an expression and it goes beyond just wearing clothes and looking good.
It translates personality, culture, strength and sometimes style.
Fashion is not going anywhere.
In fact, whenever a style of clothing or dressing is about to go out of vogue, it finds a way to resurrect and recreate itself in a different way.
To prove that it is here to not just stay but to also level up, here are 5 ways Nigerian fashion has evolved.
1.Beads and Jewelry
The change in the use of beads and other forms of jewelry is remarkable.
Formerly in ancient times, beads either belonged to and were worn only by members of the royal family or wealthy people.
But now, most women use beautiful and elegant beads that come in different styles, designs, and forms to adorn various parts of their body.
Some of those other pieces of jewelry include nose rings, waist beads, anklets, armlets, bracelets and host of others.
2.Fabrics And Attires
You cannot talk about fashion in Nigeria without mentioning the kind of fabrics that are being used. And the attires Nigerians wear using those fabrics.
Ethnic-specific materials like Aso Oke (Yoruba), Adire (Yoruba), Ankara, A’nger (Tiv), Hollandis, Jorge and Akwa oche (Igbo) have all evolved over time.
With so many Nigerians designers using these magnificent outfits to sow and how fast they have spread to the runways of major fashion shows around the world.
Even top fashion designers in places like America and Europe use these fabrics in making quality clothes, styling top models and showcasing them in world-class fashion shows in Milan, Paris, New York, and London.
3. Native Tattoos And Tribal Marks
Tribal marks are parts of Nigerian fashion. Though in the olden days they were used for tribal and slave identification and beautification.
Its evolution is somewhat negative due to the fact that its practice is fading. But it is still practiced in Pele and Gombo Yoruba people and in Zube and Yan baka Hausa people.
Local tattoos too have also faded over time but were used in ancient times. These days, only really old people still have those tattoos.
4.Vintage Clothes And Dashiki
Vintage clothes and Dashikis were previously worn back in the 80s, and they are all the rage now in the Nigerian fashion industry.
Everyone who has a good fashion sense wants to wear something vintage, printed or Ankara.
Either the shirt, skirt, gown, trousers, shorts and even suits. It is raining print in the fashion industry right now and everybody is dripping in it.
5.Baggy Trousers
They went out of style for some time and were replaced with skinny jeans and fitted trousers.
Then suddenly. like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, they came back and everybody started strutting around in them.
Baggy trousers shocked us all by recreating its self into Drop down crotch pants, that guys and girls are now wearing even in traditional attires.
And as Palazzo formal trousers and Jeans.
They are really comfy trousers, so its no surprise that they made a comeback.
