Is it over for Baba Suwe?

His name is Babatunde Omidina, but the entire world know him as Baba Suwe.

That stage name, 'Baba Suwe', means comedy to some people in Nigeria. Whenever they say "do I look like Baba Suwe to you", they indirectly telling you they are not comedians.

Baba Suwe is comedy-personified. He is an embodiment of comic reliefs in most Yoruba movies since the 90s until recently.

There was a time when Baba Suwe was almost the only reigning comedian in the Yoruba movie industry.

Then, no film producer would release a movie without having Baba Suwe's face boldly on the label. Even if he is to appear once in that movie, Baba Suwe must be promoted as though he played major roles in the movie.

This is because most movie viewers would not buy the video tape if Baba Suwe was not there.

His appearance alone is enough to make you laugh off your stress. His extraordinarily black-painted face, his type of costume and the way he gestured while on set would make you laugh even after watching the movie.

Baba Suwe was always the cynosure of all eyes in the industry. He dominated the comedy section of the Yoruba films and hardly could any other comedian compete with him.

He became a household name, everyone used to talk about him. You don't eat anything peppery or spicy while watching Baba Suwe, otherwise you may laugh and end up in the hospital.

When the likes of Bolaji Amusan, Mr Latin, came into stardom, they stood far away behind Omidina. He saw the competition coming from Mr Latin, but he didn't allow himself to be outsmarted. He was truly a born-comedian who took comedy from what it used to be to what it is now. Many young comedians like Sanyeri, Muniru, Odunlade Adekola and others owe Babatunde Omidina debts of gratitude.

Unfortunately, we have lost that energetic and passionate comedian - Baba Suwe.

Babatunde Omidina is still alive, but the 'Baba Suwe' in him is no more there and that is why we no longer see him on set.

Baba Suwe started losing it when he was arrested and detained by the NDLEA for purported drug trafficking. They him in custody for days, with the accusation that he had swallowed some cocaine. But they have no evidence to substantiate their claim as he did not defecate as they wanted.

Before then, the sudden death of his wife, Moladun Kenkelewu, and the allegation from her daughter that he was the one who killed the woman, dealt a major blow on Baba Suwe.

Recently, Baba Suwe fell sick as people even rumoured he had died.

Madam Esther Ajayi and other Nollywood actors came to his rescue with financial assistance that took him out of Nigeria for medical treatment.

Babatunde Omidina is now fit and healthy, but the Baba Suwe in him has not returned.

Baba Suwe, we miss you and we will forever miss your comedy.

We look forward to having you back on stage very soon.
