The University of Lagos will need N2bn to host the best ever Nigeria Universities Games Association Games, the institution’s Vice-Chancellor Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe has said.
UNILAG will host the 26th edition of the NUGA Games in 2019 after beating the University of Jos to the hosting rights.
The VC, who visited in company with the Secretary of the 2019 NUGA Organising Committee Prof. Joseph Awoyinfa and the Chair, Centre of Excellence in Multimedia and Cinematography, Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye, said the institution would require about N2bn to achieve the Games of their dreams.
He said, “UNILAG has started preparations to host the 2019 NUGA Games. We have some targets to achieve with the Games because we are not just hosting but hosting to win and hosting to expose our own athletes to international recognition.
“We know that each time UNILAG hosted NUGA, it has always been the best and this would not be an exception. This will be the fourth time we are hosting – the last time we hosted was in 1998.
“We have started making preparations because we know that whoever wants something done must take the first step – we have completed the swimming pool and it is an international standard pool with timing facilities.
“The Games will require about N2bn to host but we cannot provide all the funds needed ourselves. That is why we would like the public to know what is going on and come on board as we plan to host the Games. It is not about UNILAG or NUGA alone, the event is about Nigeria as a whole – since talents discovered there could go on to bring glory to the country.”
